CALIFATO ROUTE, FROM CÓRDOBA TO GRANADA

The Route of the Caliphate, which runs between Córdoba and Granada, combines a wide historical-monumental and landscape heritage of great attraction for the traveler, and an already developed network of infrastructures and services.

The road connects Córdoba and Granada, capitals of the Caliphate and Nasrid al-Andalus and was one of the busiest in the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages, as it was crossed by merchants from all over the known world who supplied and traded with these important centers. of population; it was also the path of knowledge, science and the arts. DAY 1. CORDOBA

Arrival at Córdoba station in the morning and transfer to our hotel in Córdoba.

Guided tour of Córdoba.
We begin our journey along the Route of the Caliphate with a visit to one of the jewels of the Andalusian period, Córdoba, capital of the Umayyad Caliphate. Córdoba was the wisdom capital of the Muslim West during the Caliphate period and one of the most advanced cities of its time. Born to Islam in the year 711, it treasures superb monuments that, in its time, made it worthy of being considered one of the most splendid cities in the civilized world.

We will visit the Mosque-Cathedral, declared a World Heritage Site, and we will contemplate its successive construction phases that made it one of the largest mosques in the Muslim world, and its famous “forest of columns” in the words of the romantic traveler Téophile Gautier.
We will continue the visit visiting the Jewish Quarter, with its characteristic narrow streets, the Plaza de las Tendillas, the nerve center of the city and the Plaza de la Corredera or Plaza Mayor de Córdoba, a center for social activities.

DAY 2. CORDOBA-AGUILAR DE LA FRONTERA-LUCENA-CABRA

After breakfast transfer to Aguilar de la Frontera and guided visit.
Aguilar de la Frontera is one of the most characteristic towns on this Route. When talking about Aguilar de la Frontera, we must talk about the city, since we are facing one of the most important in Córdoba. Located on a small hill, it spreads out into the fields with their white houses,
remains of its castle, its stately homes and its vast history included. Numerous buildings tell us about its past and wealth, but the Clock Tower, a very characteristic baroque bell tower, the Hospital Church and the splendid Plaza de San José, in an octagonal shape, stand out. He was head of the noble state of the González de Córdoba, one of the most influential Andalusian families during the Modern Age.
Transfer to Lucena.

Guided visit to Lucena, it was known as the “Pearl of Sepharad”. The city of Lucena is presented to the visitor as a dynamic city that treasures a rich historical and artistic heritage, inherited from an important Jewish, Arab and Christian past that made it a prosperous enclave as a city
of the three cultures. We will visit the parish of San Mateo, possibly built on a synagogue, where the monumental Chapel of the Sagrario is located, a masterpiece of Andalusian Baroque.
From here, and following a pleasant walk through the town, we will go to the Moral castle, witness to the footprint of al-Andalus where, during the War of Granada, the last Muslim king in the peninsula, Boabdil, was imprisoned.
Lunch in a traditional restaurant.

Transfer to Cabra, walk through the oldest neighborhood of Cabra, site of the old Licabrum, a primitive Iberian town that later became Egabro. This neighborhood houses the remains of the Arab wall, as well as the Parroquia de la Asunción y Ángeles and the Castillo de los Condes de Cabra.

DAY 3. CABRA - ZUHEROS -PRIEGO DE CORDOBA

Breakfast, transfer to Zuheros and guided tour of the Sierra de Zuheros.
Zuheros, a small town in Cordoba, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in its category of Historical-Artistic Complex. Raised at the foot of the mountains, from where it gets its name (Suhayra means rock. We will visit the Castle of Zuheros, built by the Arabs in the 9th century on a huge cliff. Currently it houses the remains of a Renaissance-style palace from which You can see impressive views of the entire town.We will continue our Route through the Fuente de la Zarza to introduce ourselves into the world of ornithology with the contemplation and identification of birds and animals of the Natural Park of the Subbéticas. We will approach the Mirador de la Villa, from where we can admire the mountains, a landscape full of ridges, cliffs and extensive fields lined with hundreds of olive groves Transfer to Priego de Córdoba and lunch at a restaurant in the Barrio de la Villa.

Guided tour of Priego de Córdoba. Nestled in a privileged environment, Priego de Córdoba stands out for its beauty and history, which we will visit on a visit that will take us to contemplate the impressive views from the Adarve, and to explore the byways of the Barrio de la Villa, with a strong Andalusian essence. We will visit the Chapel of the Sagrario of the Church of the Assumption (17th century) and the famous Royal Butchers (16th century). We will continue to the birthplace of Niceto Alcalá Zamora, the first president of the Second Republic, to finish at Fuentes del Rey and de la Salud, a splendid hydraulic complex that has made the town famous.

DAY 4. ALCALA LA REAL - ALFACAR - GRANADA

Breakfast, transfer to Alcalá la Real and guided visit.
Alcalá la Real extends at the foot of the famous Fortress of La Mota and the surrounding walls, a National Monument since 1931. A town with great Andalusian essence, and key in times of war to the passage to Granada, with its urban structure of Arab origin , its steep streets lined with houses, full of surprises, stately homes, churches and architectural details, samples of its splendor and its rich historical past. Its surroundings are dominated by the fortress of La Mota, begun around 722, where we will visit its Alcazaba and the Abbey church, erected by the Christians in the 16th century, in a privileged enclave. We will be able to contemplate the excavations carried out inside, where burials from different periods have been found, which make the complex a source for the study of funerary culture throughout the centuries.
Transfer to Alfacar.

Already at the gates of Granada, Alfacar, in the middle of Vega, its privileged situation and the purity of its waters made this place one of the favorites for the recreation of the Zirid monarchs. Alfacar is one of the access points to the Sierra de Huétor Natural Park. Surrounded by the Sierra de la
Alfaguara, this town with a Mediterranean climate is set between lush masses of pines and oaks.
Lunch in a typical restaurant.

Guided tour of Alfacar. The purity of the waters of Alfacar made it the supplier of the Granada capital in Muslim times and even until a few years ago. From here we will go to the Fuente Grande, the birthplace of the waters, and visit the Federico García Lorca Park, where we will be introduced to the life and work of the universal poet who was executed in these places.

Transfer to Granada. Traditional dinner and accommodation.

DAY 5. GRANADA

Granada… end of the Route of the Caliphate and last stronghold of the Muslims in Europe. We will visit the palaces of the Alhambra and the Generalife, a compendium of eight centuries of Andalusian presence, in a unique place in the world considered a World Heritage Site. We will know the palaces
Nazaríes and the entire citadel of Alhambreña.

Lunch and return to the place of origin.
